Teacher Recruitment: Abia Govt to Open Portal Wednesday

Abia State Government has said it is not true that the proposed Teachers recruitment in Primary, Junior and Secondary School levels recently approved by Governor Alex Otti has already been marred by extortion, favouritism, secrecy among others.

Recall that the State Government recently lifted embargo placed on employment by announcing her intention to recruit 2,500 teachers to supplement the already existing ones in the State.

After the announcement, the Commissioner for Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi swung into action by setting-up a seven-member task force to midwife the process of the teachers recruitment in the State.

Addressing newsmen at Abia State Universal Basic Education Board, (ASUBEB) on Monday, the Chairman of the taskforce, Dr. Mrs. Uzoamaka Amah-Mbah, said the recruitment is in line with the promises of the Governor Alex Otti led administration who is desirous of developing the education sector in the State.

She refuted reports revolving around extortion when portal for the recruitment exercise has not been opened for public access, informing that the portal will be opened on Wednesday.

Dr. Amah-Mbah, revealed that those eligible to apply should not be more than 45 years, stressing that qualification include: NCE, Bachelor in Education , BSc, Diploma in Education, insisting that there is no physical application as being speculated.

Dr. Amah-Mbah, who emphasized that the Committee is working assiduously to achieve the expectations of the Governor in this regard, informed that Abians are not expected to pay anything before participating in the process.

She warned that those caught using the opportunity to exploit unsuspecting members of the public will be meant to face the full wrath of the law, saying that the Governor is conscious of the hardship in the country.

Dr. Amah-Mbah, pointed out that the application process will last for two weeks, assuring that all modalities have been put in place to ensure that the process is hitch-free and transparent.

Speaking on the chances of people with disabilities, Dr. Amah-Mbah, stated that there will be a section in the portal for persons with disability, maintaining that the Governor also considers persons with disability in his scheme of things.

She also informed that Abians and non-Abians are free to apply during the exercise, stressing that the Governor Alex Otti led administration in the State does not discriminate among persons as he has demonstrated in his appointments since his emergence as the Governor.

Reacting to complaints of scarcity of teachers in the rural areas, Dr. Amah-Mbah, said the state government has announced plans to begin reward system for teachers in the hinterland who perform exceptionally, pointing out that this will bring out the best in them, adding that the recruitment of more teachers will also bridge the teacher deficit in the hinterland.

She called on traditional Rulers among others, to assist in encouraging their subjects in the rural communities to apply in the upcoming teachers recruitment in the State.
