Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a threat to sue President Bola Tinubu and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, for their involvement in an attack on the National President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero.

“We are taking legal action against the Tinubu administration and Imo state governor Hope Uzodimma for the brutal attack on NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, last week in Imo State, and for the authorities’ failure to bring the suspected perpetrators to justice,” SERAP announced on its X handle on Tuesday.

Ajaero was arrested by the police last week in anticipation of a state-wide protest in Imo state.

While the police denied arresting Ajaero and claimed he was taken into protective custody to prevent a potential mob attack, Uzodimma said he had no hand in the arrest of the labour leader and accused him of interfering in the political affairs of the state.

Organized labour, consisting of the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, has declared a nationwide strike starting on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.

The unions have also ordered the shutdown of electricity and fuel supplies in Imo state in response to the assault on Ajaero by Nigeria Police Force operatives.

The Labour Centres have also instructed aviation workers to suspend all flights to and from the state.
