Raheem Sterling’s future at Chelsea is uncertain after a public dispute over his role at the club.

Sterling’s representatives released a statement expressing discontent over his omission from the starting lineup against Manchester City, sparking criticism from former players and pundits.

Chelsea’s bloated squad, with 42 players according to their club website, has led to selection headaches for boss Enzo Maresca. Sterling is one of several players with uncertain futures, including Conor Gallagher, Ben Chilwell, Trevoh Chalobah, and Romelu Lukaku.

Maresca has hinted that some players may need to leave to reduce the squad size, saying “there is no space for all of them.

Sterling’s statement has been seen as a attempt to force a move away from the club, with former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin suggesting it could reduce his transfer fee.

The situation has sparked debate over Chelsea’s transfer policy, with co-controlling owners Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly spending around £1.5bn on players since taking over two years ago.

Former England defender Micah Richards accused Sterling of “letting his teammates down,” while ex-Liverpool midfielder Jamie described the statement as “absolute rubbish.”
