Demonstrators on Monday, stormed parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja to protest the lingering fuel crisis in the country.
The protest follows the recent admission by Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited NNPC Limited that it is indebted to suppliers, a development it acknowledged is hindering regular fuel supply.
The protesters chanted solidarity songs and displayed banners with various inscriptions, including ‘We are tired of fuel scarcity and stories on why refineries are not working’.
They demanded for the removal of the Group Managing Director of the NNPC Limited, Mele Kyari, with messages such as, ‘No direction under Kyari’.
Convener of the Coalition of Concerned Civil Society Organizations, Aminu Abbas, who spoke with newsmen after the protest, said it is time for the government to act and prove that they are with the people and not those who benefit from the suffering of the masses.
According to him, the NNPCL needs to be restructured and Mr Kyari needs to be shown the way out. Abbas added that fuel shortage across the country has become worse under Mr Kyari with no indication that the situation will get better.
Recall that the NNPC Limited revealed recently that it is owing foreign suppliers $6bn.
