Brazil has been thrown into mourning after over 60 people have been reported killed in a plane crash.
Tragedy struck in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state when a plane carrying 62 passengers crashed in the city of Vinhedo, killing everyone on board.
The French-made ATR 72-500 aircraft, operated by Voepass, was en route from Cascavel in Parana state to Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos international airport when it crashed in a residential area.
Dramatic images showed the plane nosediving at high speed, followed by a massive column of smoke rising from the crash site.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva confirmed the devastating news, saying, “It seems that everyone died” in the crash, which claimed the lives of 58 passengers and four crew members.
Emergency teams, including firefighters, military police, and state civil defense, were deployed to the scene in the Capela neighborhood, Vinhedo, a city of approximately 76,000 residents, located 80 kilometers northwest of Sao Paulo.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
