Onitsha- In a swift response to the closure of parts of Bridge Head Market, Onitsha, by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, Senator Dr. Tony Nwoye, Hon Idu Emeka, Hon Kelechi Okonkwo and other Labour Party stakeholders have intervened to facilitate the reopening of the market for legitimate traders.

The market’s Medicine Market (Ogbo Agwu) and Plumbing Materials sections were shut down by NAFDAC about a week ago, sparking frustration among traders who were locked out of their businesses. NAFDAC’s investigation and search for counterfeit drugs within the market prompted the closure.

During their visit, Mr. Peter Obi and other Labour Party leaders emphasized the need to balance the traders’ livelihoods with NAFDAC’s duty to apprehend culprits engaging in illegal activities. They sought to reopen the market for legitimate traders, particularly those not involved in the medicine trade, to support their families during challenging times.

This development comes amid NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts to eradicate counterfeit drugs in Anambra State. Recently, the agency impounded 10 trucks of fake drugs worth millions of naira at the Onitsha market.

Senator Dr Tony Nwoye who adressed the Traders and security agencies said they were here on spot assessment of the situation. That he has received several calls and messages over the ugly incident in the market. He assured the affected traders as part of his legislative oversight duties, he would ensure that NAFDAC operates within its mandate and adhere to global standard practices.

Other National Assembly Members who were part of the Visit were Hon Uchenna Harris Okonkwo, Deputy Chairman House Committee on Food and Drug Administration and Control, Hon Afam Ogene, Hon Iduu Emeka, Hon Fred Ezenwa of Anambra State House of Assembly and Hon Barr Jude Umennajiego.
