The traditional ruler, Abala Autonomous Community, Abia State, Eze Chimaeze Nwokenne, has sought government’s collaboration with traditional rulers to ensure effective community policing. Nwokenne made the call while speaking with newsmen shortly after his coronation as the Ezeukwu III of Abala Ancient Kingdom, at Abala, in Obingwa Local Council of the state.
He observed that most communities had already engaged the services of both young men and women as local vigilantes, lamenting that the only challenge is maintenance.
According to him, these young people offer selfless services, and do nothing to help them run their families. Something must be done urgently to sustain those engaged as local vigilantes to prevent collapse of security.
In his remarks, Governor Alex Otti, who congratulated Nwokenne on his enthronement, said his choice at the moment to be part of the new Abia dream was not by accident but symbolic.
Meanwhile, Otti has applauded Nze James Agharandu Egbu for his devotion to service to his community and the entire state, describing him as a great philanthropist worthy to be emulated.
Otti, who spoke during the birthday thanksgiving ceremony organised by the people of Umuonyike, Aba South Local Council, to celebrate Egbu at St. Joseph College, Aba, noted that the celebrant had been an inspiration to all who have benefited from his extraordinary kindness and benevolence.
