The Abia State Government has relieved Prof. Onyemachi Ogbulu, Vice Chancellor of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, along with other principal officers, of their duties.

This decision was announced by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, in Umuahia on Monday during a press briefing. The announcement followed this week’s Executive Council (EXCO) meeting, presided over by Governor Alex Otti. The commissioner disclosed that Prof. Ndukwe Okeudo has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor.

Prince Kanu also outlined other key appointments: Rt. Hon. Agwu U. Agwu as Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Catherine Uju Ifejika as Chancellor, and Onwubiko Dike as a Governing Council member. Additional appointments include two Deputy Vice Chancellors, four Senate members, two representatives from the congregation, one member from the convocation, a representative from the Ministry of Education, and a new Bursar. These appointments will take effect on November 1, 2024.

These changes come in response to the findings of the ABSU visitation panel, whose report was approved for release on Saturday, October 26, 2024. The report recommended an investigation into the former Vice Chancellor’s conduct, including issues related to his “traditional title and Payroll admission.”

Further, the White Paper from the panel advised the revocation of the M.Phil certificate and termination of the PhD program of the former Bursar, Mr. Chucks Chikwendu Nwaogwugwu, due to irregularities in his admission process.
