The Osun State Government has confirmed two cases of mpox, a viral disease, in the state.

The cases involve two male patients, aged five and 25, who are currently receiving treatment at the State Hospital in Ilesa West.

The State Commissioner for Health, Mr. Jola Akinola, has assured residents that there is no cause for alarm, as the government is actively managing the situation.

He stated that the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has been activated, and stakeholders will meet weekly to strategize on preventing the spread of the virus.

Akinola noted that the state had successfully managed COVID-19 and prevented a cholera outbreak, and is now taking proactive measures to prevent the spread of mpox.

The State Epidemiologist, Dr. Omolola Adeagbo, reported that 47 suspected cases were recorded across 13 Local Government Areas, with two confirmed cases.

The government has taken measures to prevent the spread, including deploying Rapid Response Team members, advocacy and sensitization efforts, community active case search, and retroactive health facility search. Residents are urged to remain calm and follow preventive measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
