The three leading opposition figures in Nigeria – Atiku Abubakar (PDP), Peter Obi (Labour Party), and Rabiu Kwankwaso (NNPP) – are exploring a potential merger to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.
According to PDP deputy national spokesman Ibrahim Abdullahi, the opposition leaders are willing to put aside personal interests to form a formidable alliance and address Nigeria’s widespread insecurity and hunger.
Abdullahi acknowledged that past conflicts within the PDP led to the departure of key figures like Obi, Kwankwaso, and Nyesom Wike, which contributed to the party’s defeat in the last election.
He expressed hope that discussions among the opposition leaders could lead to a united front against the APC.
While individual ambitions may need to be set aside, Abdullahi emphasized that the primary goal is to salvage Nigerians from the current hardship and insecurity.
He suggested that one of the leaders might concede to another, allowing the party to move forward with a unified candidate.
The ultimate objective is to provide a viable alternative to the ruling party and address the country’s pressing issues.
