Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has extolled the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief (Dr.) Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, describing the Edo icon as a peace ambassador who has continued to promote unity among citizens and residents of the state, contributing immensely to the growth of the state.
Obaseki made this known while briefing newsmen during the Veterans Cup Football Tournament finale, organized by the Edo State Football Association, in honour of the Esama of Benin at 90, held on Friday August 30, 2024, in Benin City.
According to the Governor, “I think it is more than participation, it is about celebrating an icon. Chief Igbinedion represents so much to our society. He has been there for over six decades supporting social causes, supporting the communities that he lived in, and he has done everything. He is best known as a businessperson. But I think for me, the role he has played that is even more significant, is acting as a glue for our society.
“You can say anything you want to say about Chief, but one thing nobody can dispute or argue, is that he is somebody who has always thrived to bring people together and to bring harmony in our land”.
Obaseki added: “For me, there is nothing more fulfilling than coming to be with him today, to just appreciate him; to let him know that at 90, we are thankful to him for what he has done, how he has represented us. He has gifted us with a harmonious family, a harmonious state, and a harmonious Benin.
“This tournament is a maiden one, and that is why I felt it important enough to come and honour both our father and my brother, Lucky Igbinedion. I hope that as a maiden edition, we will continue to set aside a day, to make sure that we keep this competition alive”.
In his remarks, the former Governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion, congratulated his father, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, for his tremendous impact on the lives of many. According to the former Governor, the football match was organized as part of activities to celebrate the Esama, because football brings peace, happiness, and unity among people regardless of tribe or ethnicity.
He thanked the Governor and his team for gracing the occasion, noting it was a season of celebration for his family
