Gunmen operating in Nnewi, Anambra State, attacked a police van on Friday, killing one officer at a junction in the area.
The incident occurred at about 9 am at Omata junction, in Uruagu community, along the Nnewi Oba road, where the police team was on checkpoint duty.
According to sources, the attackers threw an improvised explosive device at the police team when they were repelled.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident in a press release, stating that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered a manhunt operation to apprehend the gunmen.
The police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Assistant Commissioner in charge of Nnewi Area Command is leading the operation, working with locals to unmask and apprehend the attackers.
