The Nigerian Military has released names of its personnel killed in an attack in Okuama Delta State.
The 17 military personnel were killed last week in Okuama, a community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State after a peace mission.
Among the personnel according to the Defence Headquarters were Lt Col AH Ali, the Command Officer, 181 Amphibious Battalion, Nigerian Army. Others are Maj SD Shafa, Maj DE Obi and Capt U Zakari amongst others
Following the killing, Okuama community came under heavy attack by yet to be identified persons even though the Nigerian Army has assured residents of the area of no reprisal attacks.
The gruesome murder has continued to draw condemnations from many Nigerians including the number one citizen President Bola Tinubu who described it as an attack on the nation and gave marching orders to security agencies to fish out the masterminds of the attack.
Granting full authority to the defence headquarters and chief of defence staff, Tinubu urged decisive action to ensure justice for the fallen soldiers and the civilian victims.
The soldiers were deployed to control clashes between Okuama and Okoloba communities, stemming from disputes over land and fishing rights in the oil-rich region. However, they were ambushed by youth from one of the communities, as confirmed by the army.
An ongoing investigation has led to several arrests linked to the incident, including those involved in the killing of a commanding officer, two majors, one captain, and a dozen soldiers.
