The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), in partnership with UNICEF and the Imo State Government, is set to hold a two-day workshop aimed at bolstering the media’s influence on regional development. The workshop will take place in Owerri, the Imo State capital, from October 23 to 24, 2024.

In a joint statement by NGE President, Mr. Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, the event is highlighted as a crucial platform for discussing the role of the media in addressing the socio-economic, political, and environmental challenges faced by Nigeria’s South-East and South-South regions.

With 50 participants expected, including senior editors and media executives from various outlets—print, electronic, and online—the workshop will also include Guild members working with governments in the nine states across these geopolitical zones.

The statement emphasized that the media can play a pivotal role in alleviating the complex challenges faced by the regions, such as poverty, infrastructural deficits, environmental degradation, and socio-political conflicts. “By raising awareness, giving a voice to marginalized communities, and providing vital information about social services, policies, and programs, the media can help to mitigate these issues,” the editors noted.

The NGE further commended the Imo State Government and UNICEF for their collaboration, acknowledging the significant impact the media can have on influencing public opinion and policy, mobilizing community actions, and holding leaders accountable. Through tools like collaborative reporting, data-driven journalism, investigative pieces, and social media engagement, the media is well-positioned to contribute effectively to addressing the region’s challenges.

Chaired by Professor Stella Okunna, a renowned mass communication scholar and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Paul University, Awka, the workshop will feature presentations from experts and key stakeholders. According to the NGE, the workshop aims to equip participants with improved skills for reporting on socio-economic and environmental issues, especially those affecting vulnerable groups, including children. It will also foster collaboration with UNICEF to focus on child-centered challenges, which when addressed, could positively impact overall regional development.

Themed “The Media as Partners in Regional Development,” the event will be officially opened by Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma. NGE President Eze Anaba and UNICEF Nigeria’s Country Representative, Ms. Cristian Munduate, will co-host the proceedings.
