Unwarranted assault on members of the Nigerian Bar Association members in Gombe State by yet-to-be-identified persons, has caused an unrest in the state’s branch with members vehemently condemning the assault.
The unfortunate incident which took place on Saturday involved the attack of Upper Area Court Judge III, Ayuba Buba-Dalas, Barrister Usman Yahaya and a Buba-Dalas’ staff who are said to be seriously injured.
According to reports, the court in question conducts a physical assessment of issues relating to land disputes to ascertain the cause of conflict.
Sadly, Buba-Dalas and his staff were rounded and assaulted when they embarked on the tour to take the land measurement to ascertain the rights of the parties before it as is the norm.
An eyewitness who described the unusual incident to news correspondents noted that the innocent people were attacked by villagers.
According to a press statement signed by the branch chairman, Barrister Benjamin Sati, the branch had on Sunday visited the victims and vowed that the perpetrators would be arrested and prosecuted.
The statement partly read, “The Members of the Gombe Branch paid a visit to the Upper Area Court Judge that was attacked at in quo and the Plaintiff’s Counsel in persons of Ayuba Buba-Dalas and Usman Yahaya Esq, in their respective residences in Gombe metropolitan.
“The branch condemns in totality the barbaric dastardly act of some mischief makers in coordinating the attacks. We shall by the grace of God liaise with relevant stakeholders to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.
“Mr Usman Yahaya whose injury is grievous is responding to treatment and we call on members to remain calm and cooperate with the EXCO to follow up on this issue.”
While bemoaning the impact of the assault on the jurist and the others, Sati urged fellow members to be cautious, adding that they are all endangered species.
“This is a sign that nobody is safe, and we all are endangered species. I have contacted the IPO in Talasse Division, and we hope to engage the office of the Commissioner of Police through the Officer-in-Charge of Legal who was in the entourage for this visit for necessary assistance,” the statement added.
