It was a failed criminal outing at Orofia Oranto, Ukpo, in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, following the apprehension of a suspected armed robber, Joel Bayero, by vigilant community youths during an alleged armed robbery attempt.
The apprehension also led to the recovery of a locally made gun and bullets from the suspect, with which he intended to carry out his criminal mission before luck ran out of him.
Sharing the incident on social media, Nweze Burna, a netizen and one of the community youths involved in apprehending the suspect recounted how the incident happened and how the security-conscious youths swooped on him.
Some netizens who know Joel recognized and identified him in comments as a commercial motorcyclist (Okada rider) in the community.
According to the post, the suspect, described as an “Ekperima” and “Mugu,” allegedly stormed the community with an English pistol but was intercepted and apprehended before he could carry out his criminal mission.
The netizen further revealed that the suspect was handed over to “authorities” while also urging residents to remain vigilant and security-conscious.
Meanwhile, during interrogation,the suspect, identified as Joel Bayero from Plateau State claimed that the gun recovered from him was not his own, alleging that it was given to him by one of his passengers.
He further claimed that he was unaware that a firearm was inside the bag allegedly handed over to him by the said passenger.
However, when further pressed to provide details about the identity, destination, and whereabouts of the supposed passenger who allegedly handed the gun to him as he claimed, Bayero failed to give any meaningful or useful response, further strengthening stings of doubts on his unfounded claims.
As at the time of filing this report, it could not be confirmed whether the suspect had been handed over to the police for further investigation or not.
