Manchester City avenged their FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United by lifting the Community Shield in a thrilling penalty shootout, after a 1-1 draw at Wembley Stadium.
The match exploded into life in the final 10 minutes, as Alejandro Garnacho gave United the lead before Bernardo Silva leveled in the 89th minute. City then edged a marathon shootout 7-6, with Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans failing to score for United.
Despite being severely hampered by the absence of key players, City controlled the game early on, with Jeremy Doku causing havoc down the left.
However, United created the better chances, with Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes coming close.
Garnacho’s introduction brought pace and invention to the United attack, and he thought he had won the game with a stunning strike on 82 minutes.
However, City rallied and levelled in the final minute of the 90 through Silva.
In the penalty shootout, Silva’s effort was saved by Andre Onana, but Ederson kept City alive with a brilliant save from Sancho. Evans then blazed over, and Manuel Akanji scored the winner to seal City’s victory.
The win marks City’s first Community Shield title in their record-breaking four consecutive Premier League seasons.
