The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeder Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in the South East has expressed concerns about the potential challenges its members may face during the 2024 Ramadan season. This unease arises from the recent demolition of cattle markets in Lokpanta and Ugwuoba by the governments of Abia State and Enugu State, respectively.

In a statement released on Sunday by the immediate past Chairman of MACBAN South East Zone, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, the association lamented that the economic hardship in the country, coupled with the market demolitions, could adversely affect its members and other Muslims residing in the affected areas. Siddiki urged the governments of Abia and Enugu states to provide adequate compensation to the victims of the demolitions to enable them to pursue their legitimate livelihoods.

While acknowledging the need to comply with government policies, Siddiki expressed optimism that the governments would show understanding and compensate the affected individuals, emphasizing the importance of a humane approach to governance. The statement called for the swift construction of new market facilities, and the involvement of MACBAN’s leadership in matters concerning the reconstruction.

MACBAN encouraged its members to remain calm, await the final decisions of the governments, and pray for peace and stability across the South East region.

The association also emphasized the importance of law-abiding behavior and urged members to avoid actions that could jeopardize peace. Siddiki stressed the need for humility and sincerity in interactions with the local communities for sustainable coexistence.

Expressing gratitude to the governments and leaders in Igbo land, MACBAN urged continued support and accommodation of their legitimate business activities in cattle breeding and selling. The statement concluded with a plea to political leaders to be conscientious in formulating policies that positively impact the well-being of Nigerians, expressing confidence that Nigeria would overcome its current challenges.
