Liverpool are working on bringing Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso and sporting director Simon Rolfes to the club in a sensational double swoop.
Alonso and ex Red is believed to be on top of the club’s list for a successor for Jurgen Klopp who leaves at the end of the current football season
Sources say Liverpool are keen to snap up the pair key to the stunning transformation of the Bundesliga side.
Klopp is set to depart the club at the end of the season, while Schmadtke left at the end of the January transfer window after joining last June.
Rolfes penned a new deal at Leverkusen last November to keep him at the club until 2028, while Alonso’s contract is set to expire in 2026.

Alonso, a former star at Anfield, has emerged as one of Europe’s brightest young managers during his incredible spell at Leverkusen, who currently sit at the top of the German top-flight.
Liverpool remain at the top of the Premier League table after their 4-1 away win against Brentford on Saturday afternoon.
They are next in action against Luton Town on Wednesday evening.
