Lionel Messi, captain of the Argentina national team and Inter Miami forward, will be evaluated weekly after suffering a ligament injury in his right ankle during the Copa America final.

Messi exited Argentina’s 1-0 win over Colombia in the 64th minute, visibly in pain, and was later seen with a badly swollen ankle.

Inter Miami confirmed the injury on Tuesday and stated that his availability will be assessed periodically as rehab progresses.

Inter Miami boss Gerardo “Tata” Martino said, “(Lionel Messi) will be evaluated week by week. We will see how his recovery progresses without taking any kind of risk.” Messi himself posted on Instagram that he is doing well and hopes to return soon.

The 37-year-old’s injury comes as Inter Miami prepares to host Chicago on Saturday night, sitting second in the Eastern Conference standings. Messi’s availability for the match is uncertain, pending further evaluation.
