The Football Association of England has appointed Lee Carsley as interim England manager for September’s Nations League games, as the search for Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor continues.

Carsley, 50, steps up from his role as England Under-21 boss, bringing familiarity with the players and international football cycle.

His priority is to ensure continuity and secure promotion in the Uefa Nations League.

A former Premier League midfielder, Carsley has managed Coventry, Brentford, and Birmingham, and led England Under-21s to the European Championship title in 2023.

Carsley will be in charge for games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland, with the possibility of remaining in the position throughout autumn while the FA continues its recruitment process.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham praised Carsley as a “fantastic coach” and a strong interim solution, confident in his ability to perform well in the Nations League games.

The FA is conducting a search for a permanent replacement, with a job advert published on its website.

Ben Futcher will replace Carsley as England U21 boss, with backroom teams to be confirmed soon.

Former Manager Gareth Southgate led England for eight years, reaching a World Cup semi-final in 2018, a World Cup quarter-final in 2022 and Euros finals in 2021 and 2024.
