Some residents of Surulere area of Lagos State were seen scooping oil after a 33,000 liter tanker crashed on Friday.
It was suspected that the tanker, which was carrying motor oil, accidentally overturned while traveling up the Dorman Long Bridge opposite Abalti Barracks on Western Avenue.
First responders currently on the scene include the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Federal Fire Service.
Cleanup work is already underway to neutralize the oil components to prevent secondary incidents from occurring.
After an emergency alarm Senior Special Assistant on New Media to the Governor, Jubril Gawat, said: “Efforts are underway to deploy earth-moving equipment to recover the tanker as a traffic jam accumulates behind the Ojuelegba Bridge.”
“Cleanup operations are ongoing as chemical foam agents have been used to neutralize the oil components, which could lead to a secondary incident.”
There were no injuries as the driver and assistant escaped uninjured and were in good hands at the scene of the accident.
The cause of the accident has not yet been clarified.
