President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
This follows the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who reached the mandatory age of 70.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Council Chambers in the State House, Abuja, marking a new chapter in the Nigerian judiciary.
However, Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment is pending Senate approval.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) had earlier recommended Justice Kekere-Ekun for the position, citing her exceptional qualifications and experience.
With a distinguished legal career spanning several decades, she is well-equipped to lead the nation’s judiciary.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s journey to the apex court began with her appointment as a Senior Magistrate Grade II in Lagos State in 1989. She later became a Judge of the High Court of Lagos State and subsequently served on the Court of Appeal.
In 2013, she was elevated to the Supreme Court, becoming the fifth female Justice to serve on the nation’s highest court. Throughout her career, Justice Kekere-Ekun has demonstrated a strong commitment to justice and the rule of law.
As Acting CJN, Justice Kekere-Ekun is expected to build on the legacy of her predecessor while introducing reforms to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the judiciary.
Her leadership will be crucial in shaping the future of Nigeria’s legal landscape.
With her swearing-in, Justice Kekere-Ekun makes history as one of the few women to hold the position of Chief Justice of Nigeria.
