Sharing is caring

Recall the News about the police brutality that led to the painful death of Mr Onyebuchi Anene, a native of Umuoramma Village in Awka, Anambra State which took place within Kubwa in Abuja Federal Capital Territory on May 22nd 2024.

Distinguished Senator Victor Umeh being the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District which includes Awka, received a petition from the wife of the deceased, Mrs Ogochukwu Anene and Ayom Na Okpala Awka Welfare Association, on the matter and he has left no stone unturned in trying to ensure that justice is done for the brutally assaulted and slained Onyebuchi Anene who was an only son of his parents and father of two children.

However, the Petition presented by Senator Victor Umeh in the Senate on 4th of July was referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petition. The Committee invited the Petitioners and the Police for hearing on Tuesday 29th October 2024 by 2pm via the letter NASS/S/10/CPP/60/2 dated 22/10/2024 but only the Petitioners appeared which did not go well with the Committee. Another date for hearing of the Matter was issued (November 27, 2024) with a stern warning to proceed with the Case and to adjudicate even if either of the parties fail to appear.

Therefore, on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petition received both the Petitioners and the delegation of the Nigerian Police Force. The Police confessed to the killing of Onyebuchi Anene by one of their Officers, ASP Adamu Buba who stucked the victim’s eye with tear gas and left him to bleed to death at National Hospital Abuja.

Compensation: the Petitioners have requested for one billion naira Compensation and Justice for their late brother but the Police said only the IGP that can make any commitment on the Compensation amount.

The Chairman of the Committee therefore asked the Committee Clerk to invite the Parties for another hearing within few days in order to agree on the amount as Adequate Compensation for the Petitioners.

Thanks to Senator Victor Umeh’s unwavering commitment in effectively representing his people and being a voice to the voiceless.
