It Was A Joyous Atmosphere as The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, an alumnus of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, was announced to oversee the office of the Vice-Chancellor following the expiration of Professor Charles Esimone’s tenure on, June 3rd, 2024.
This announcement was made at the special Senate meeting held at the University Auditorium.
Professor Ikechebelu, being the only Deputy Vice-Chancellor in the institution, was announced in accordance with the NUC’s circular to Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities dated May 28, 2024.
The circular, entitled “Re: End Of Tenure Of Some Vice-Chancellors Of Federal Universities,” directed outgoing Vice-Chancellors to nominate a Deputy Vice-Chancellor, as recommended by their Senate, to temporarily oversee the office of the Vice-Chancellor.
To that effect, Professor Esimone officially handed over to Professor Ikechebelu.
It is trite to note that both the outgone and the new Vice Chancellor are all Members of University of Nigeria Alumni Association (UNAA), Awka Branch.
Recall that the outgone VC, Prof Esimone is an ALOHA and Member Board of Trustees of UNAA who singlehandedly sponsored the 108th NEC Meeting and 27th National Convention of the University of Nigeria Alumni Association held in Awka, Anambra State late April 2022. He also delivered the Keynote Speech of the event. The Alumni therefore wished Prof Esimone success in his future endeavour and his successor, a successful administration of the university named after the founder of UNN.
Again, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC Academic) Prof Frederick Odibo also a super lion, has retired and was not in contention for the office of the vice chancellorship of UNIZIK. Thus, as at the time UNAA Awka Branch hosted the above event, the three ranking members of the university governing board (VC, DVC Admin and DVC Acad) were all super lions belonging to the host branch.
