The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) has officially presented Certificates of Return to the 27 chairmen-elect from the recently concluded local government elections. This ceremony, which took place on Tuesday, follows the announcement that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) claimed victory in all 27 local government chairmanship positions and 305 councillorship seats.
During the presentation, ISIEC Chairman, Charles Ejiogu, affirmed that the issuance of the certificates was carried out in compliance with legal provisions. He also announced that certificates for vice chairpersons and councillors would be distributed in the coming days.
Ejiogu praised the peaceful nature of the electoral process, noting that election observers declared it to be fair, transparent, and credible. “What has just happened is the concrete demonstration of the will and determination of the people to express themselves democratically in an atmosphere devoid of bitterness and rancour,” Ejiogu remarked.
The election saw two female candidates emerge victorious as chairpersons, while 14 women were elected as vice chairpersons across various local government areas.
This electoral success highlights the growing involvement of women in local governance in Imo State.
