Indigenes of Ezeala/Ezike, Umuezeala in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State have cried out to the state government and security agencies following the gruesome murder of an indigene of the community Innocent Obi
An indigene, Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who spoke to our reporter says, Obi who until his death was the Deputy Registrar of the Federal Polytechnic, Uwana, Ebonyi State was killed on Saturday night by some unknown gunmen.
He said Obi returned home for the burial of his relative when hoodlums, dressed in military and police uniforms and numbering about six, invaded his house at about 10 pm and attacked him with dangerous weapons.
Reports say the gunmen shot sporadically into the air to scare the villages and deter anyone who might want to come to his aid
He said, “Everybody in this village is living in fear, we cannot sleep with our two eyes closed. Please government and the security agencies should come to our aid before they kill all of us. There will be election in Imo next month how do they expect us to vote under this condition”
Mr Obi, popularly known by villagers as Onye Army, was a retired Army officer before joining the Federal Polytechnic Uwana in Ebonyi State.
Attacks like this is common in Imo state following the increase in the activities of IPOB in the South East
The attacks often target security agencies, government officials and facilities.
Hundreds of people, including traditional rulers, have been killed and injured in such attacks.
The latest incident occurred less than a month after gunmen killed many security operatives in Umualumaku, a community in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of the state.
The Nigerian government has accused the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of being responsible for the deadly attacks in the region. However, the group has repeatedly denied their involvement in the attacks.
IPOB is leading the agitation for an independent state of Biafra which it wants carved out from the South-east and some parts of South-south Nigeria.
