The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed media reports suggesting it has recognised certain individuals as the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), or restored a particular individual as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a statement issued on Thursday by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, the Commission described the reports as “false and misleading.”
Oyekanmi clarified that the names of LP national officers currently appearing on INEC’s official website were uploaded in compliance with a court order unrelated to the recent Supreme Court judgement on the Labour Party. He also noted that the name of the PDP National Secretary on the same website “was neither deleted nor reinstated,” countering claims of recent changes.
“As a law-abiding institution, the Commission is carefully studying the judgement of the Supreme Court on the Labour Party and will communicate its decision to the public in due course,” Oyekanmi stated.
INEC urged the public to disregard any contrary interpretations or assumptions made by the media on the issue.
