The Imo State Library Board, on February 24, 2024, described its condition as ‘a sorry condition’, since its relocation to New Owerri. Recall that the Former Governor Rochas Okorocha, had moved the board from the Government House roundabout, by Okigwe Road, to New Owerri, adjacent to the Imo House of Assembly.
It was gathered from a reliable source that the Imo State Library Board, since 2014, stopped receiving financial assistance from the government to run the day-to-day affairs. “Since we were relocated to this place in the year 2014, we have never received a kobo from the government. We’ve been writing and complaining, but nothing has been done.”
“Each year, our staff continues to retire and there is no replacement for the workers. Not only that, Two years ago, the Imo State Government brought 17 Containers filled with books and they are rotting away here.”
We, therefore, appeal to the Governor, Hope Uzodimma, to come to the aid of the Imo State Library Board, which was abandoned by the Former Governors of the State, before the advent of the Shared Prosperity administration. “Our amiable Governor should relocate Imo State Library to the Government round-about or The Family Support Programme (FSP) building, at Wetheral Road or any other central area in the Owerri metropolis. “For now, Funding, replacement of retired staff and low patronage are our greatest challenges. Let the government assist us. He can still upgrade this place.”
