Imo State House Of Assembly Approves Motion For Enhanced School Security Measures

Sharing is caring

In response to escalating cases of vandalism, criminal activity, and the misuse of public school facilities, the Imo State House of Assembly has unanimously approved a motion urging Governor Hope Uzodimma to direct the Education Commissioner to collaborate with relevant agencies to bolster security at primary and secondary schools across the state.

The motion, presented, by Rt. Hon. Clinton Amadi, representative of Owerri Municipal Constituency, addressed the alarming rate of criminal activity in public school environments. Amadi condemned the continued defilement of these facilities, where unauthorized individuals often misuse the premises for illicit activities both during and outside school hours, turning schools into hubs of drug abuse, vandalism, and other dangerous behaviors. These actions have led to the destruction of property and an unsafe learning environment, with teachers and students frequently intimidated or endangered when they attempt to confront these activities.

Amadi voiced his concerns passionately, describing how school properties are frequently desecrated and misused. He noted that classrooms, administrative offices, and school grounds have suffered severe damage from criminal elements, who often leave behind illegal paraphernalia such as used condoms, remnants of drugs, and stolen or broken furniture. “Without adequate security personnel, our schools have become susceptible to such lawless activities, which ultimately threaten the futures of our children,” he stated.

The Deputy Minority Leader and House Committee Chairman on Digital Economy and E-Government, Amadi emphasized that, although the Imo State Government has made significant strides to enhance school facilities and create a conducive learning environment, the absence of dedicated security personnel has undermined these efforts.

The motion received robust support from Hon. Sam Osuji of Isiala Mbano Constituency and co-sponsorship from several legislators, including Rt. Hon. Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu, Hon. Princewill Amuchie, and others. In their contributions, lawmakers highlighted the foundational role of primary and secondary schools in shaping students’ futures and called for proper fencing and adequate security to protect these institutions. They also advised parents to monitor their children’s activities and instill values that would make them positive representatives of their families and communities.

Following these discussions, Speaker Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe called for a vote, which passed unanimously. He ruled that the Assembly formally resolve to request Governor Uzodimma to mandate the Education Commissioner to ensure collaboration with relevant agencies for the placement of security personnel in public schools during and after school hours to safeguard against these ongoing threats.

The Clerk of the House was directed to communicate this resolution to Governor Uzodimma for immediate action.
