The Imo State Ministry Of Women Affairs And Social Welfare has announced the re-arrest of Chinagorom Ukaegbu, the man who brutally beat a widow with a cutlass in a viral video that surfaced on social media platforms two
months ago.

The Honorable Commissioner, Hon. Nkechinyere Ugwu  made the announcement during a press briefing at her office on July 4, 2024. She stated that the re-arrest was made possible by the Governor’s wife,  Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma, who directed the ministry to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure justice is served.

The incident, which occurred in August 2023, sparked widespread outrage and calls for action against gender-based violence.

The video showed Ukaegbu mercilessly beating the widow and throwing her into a gutter, leaving her severely injured. He also attempted to murder her son, who came to rescue his mother.

Ukaegbu was initially arrested and spent six weeks in custody but was released and continued threatening the widow and her son. The ministry’s legal unit discovered that the case was not properly dispensed with, leading to the re-arrest and upcoming re-arraignment on July 17, 2024.

Commissioner Ugwu emphasized the ministry’s commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens and ensuring justice is served. She warned violators of human rights to desist or face the full weight of the law.

The Governor’s wife, Barr. Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma, has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights and has taken a firm stand against harmful widowhood practices. Her directive to the ministry demonstrates her commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens.

The Re-arrest and pending prosecution send a strong message that gender-based violence will not be tolerated in Imo State. The Commissioner and the Governor’s wife have shown leadership and determination in addressing this critical issue, and their efforts are lauded by human rights activists and citizens alike.

As the case proceeds to court, the people of Imo State and beyond watch with keen interest, hoping that justice will be served and that this will serve as a deterrent to potential perpetrators of gender-based violence.
