In response to a recent bomb explosion at the Orlu International Market that claimed two lives and left several injured, the Imo State Police Command has initiated a one-day training for officers on the detection, handling, and disposal of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
According to a press statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, the specialized training was conducted under the leadership of CSP M.A. Ogini, who heads the Anti-Bomb Squad. ASP Okoye highlighted that the session was designed to enhance officers’ capabilities to identify and neutralize IED threats effectively.
The training attracted participants from various divisions and area commands across the state, demonstrating a broad commitment to bolstering the force’s counter-terrorism readiness. ASP Okoye further indicated that this exercise is intended to be the first of many, with follow-up sessions planned at divisional levels to reinforce and expand on the skills learned.
Addressing officers, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, underscored the rising trend of IED use in criminal activities by certain elements. He emphasized the importance of equipping the force with the skills required to manage these emerging threats and ensure public safety. CP Danjuma encouraged full participation in the training, noting that it would greatly enhance officers’ response capabilities against security challenges.
In his closing remarks, the police commissioner reaffirmed the Imo State Police Command’s commitment to strengthening professional engagement and security readiness across all units. He emphasized that the knowledge gained from this training will be disseminated statewide to prepare the force for potential security threats and uphold the safety and security of the public.
