The Imo State Police Command has issued a stern warning to unlicensed and unscrupulous native doctors operating in the state, urging them to desist from illegal practices or face the full force of the law.
This directive follows a resolution reached during an emergency meeting of Imo traditional rulers, chaired by Eze Emmanuel Okeke, where it was mandated that all native doctors and traditional practitioners in the state undergo official verification and registration.
Speaking at a quarterly meeting between the police and civil society organizations, organized by Cleen Foundation at the Command Headquarters in Owerri, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, emphasized the police’s resolve to rid the state of criminal elements disguised as native doctors.
According to Okoye, over the past few years, law enforcement agents have arrested more than ten native doctors implicated in serious crimes such as kidnapping, ritual killings, and armed robbery. Following thorough investigations, these suspects have been prosecuted and charged accordingly.
“In light of the alarming rate of criminal activities linked to these fraudulent native doctors, the Command is issuing a final warning to those engaging in fetish practices or aiding criminal activities. Anyone caught will be dealt with decisively,” Okoye declared.
He further assured that the police would intensify operations to dismantle illegal activities associated with these individuals and ensure they are brought to justice.
In addition to clamping down on criminal elements, the Imo State Police Command has raised concerns over the growing menace of child trafficking. Okoye urged parents and guardians to be more vigilant in safeguarding their children against traffickers.
The spokesperson revealed that the Command has successfully arrested more than ten child traffickers and rescued eight abducted children, who have since been reunited with their families. The suspects are currently facing prosecution at the Nigeria Correctional Service in Owerri.
Addressing concerns about misconduct among police officers, Okoye reassured the public that the Command has reinforced its internal disciplinary measures to curb extortion and other unethical practices within its ranks. Officers found guilty of professional misconduct, he said, would face strict sanctions.
The Imo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order while urging citizens to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities to security agencies.
