The Imo State government has reiterated its determination to partner with the Association of Table Water Producers, Imo State Chapter, through its relevant Agencies to fish out quack table water producers, noting that water is life and a healthy Nation is a wealthy nation.
The Secretary to Imo State Government , Chief Cosmas Iwu who disclosed this recently during a meeting he held with the Executive members of the Association at the Cabinet Office, Owerri and condemned the activities of some quack table water producers in the state,who cut corners, by not abiding by the professional ethics and standard set by NAFDAC.
Chief Iwu, who equally commended the members of the Association, who went on strike for only three days, but have resumed, in order to enable them wash their tanks , change their micro filters at their respective factories, in line with the regulations and directives of National Food & Drug Administration Control(NAFDAC), also highlighted that most water – borne diseases are gotten from drinking bad water. He therefore gave the members of the Association a pat on their back for having the interest of Imo Consumers at heart and for rising above profit making.
The SGI, stressed on the need for more stringent measures and laws to checkmate and sanction the quackery activities, so as to serve as a deterant . He noted that the Association cannot do it alone and enjoined them to liaise with the relevant Agencies, like the State Consumer Protection Agency and Ministry of Health, in order to ensure that it is not all comers affairs.
Earlier, in his report, the State Chairman of the Association, Mr Lumanze Bismarck, said that the Association embarked on a 3 day strike from 9th June to 11th June, 2024, when they observed a particular sub standard table water in circulation in the state, and visited the production factory of the Quack producer, whom he said was not a registered member of the Association.
According to him, he said that, they used the three days strike period to notify the Government and the public that the sub standard table water in circulation was not from their members.
He also disclosed that the executives therefore mandated their members to use the period of strike to wash their tanks and change their micro filters, in line with the regulations of the National Food & Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC).
