Imo Chapter Of The Pharmaceutical Society Of Nigeria Calls For Government Action On Open Drug Sales And More Support For Healthcare Advancement

Sharing is caring

The Imo State Chapter of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has urged the state government to address the rising public health risks linked to the unregulated sale of drugs in open markets. They warned that without immediate intervention, residents face an increased risk of drug resistance, disease spread, and potential organ damage.

These concerns were highlighted in a communiqué released after the Imo State Pharmaceutical Society/Pharma Business Summit, held at Rock View Hotel, Owerri, co-signed by Dr. Nobert Ajiero, Imo PSN Chairman, and Dr. Solomon Nwafuru, Chairman of the Imo Pharma Business Summit 2024.

In the communiqué, the PSN expressed gratitude to Governor Hope Uzodimma for advancing the construction of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Imo State University and urged the government to consider similar projects at K. O. Mbadiwe University. They emphasized that with Imo State’s significant contribution to the global pharmacy profession, there is an urgent need for more pharmacy institutions to strengthen the healthcare sector.

Highlighting the challenges faced by community pharmacies, the PSN called on the government to recognize and support pharmacies as essential health institutions, similar to the treatment they receive in advanced countries. The communiqué advocated for tax waivers or reductions for community pharmacies to enhance their capacity to support sustainable development goals and universal health coverage within the state.

The PSN also requested the government to appoint over 80 pharmacists across all levels of healthcare facilities, stressing that pharmacists are vital in healthcare delivery beyond their academic roles.

Furthermore, the communiqué emphasized the need for a stronger partnership between security agencies and pharmacists, especially to enable quicker access during health emergencies. PSN underscored that collaboration would enhance response times and healthcare outcomes in times of epidemic or pandemic.

Addressing the impact of national fuel scarcity and high petrol prices, the PSN requested Governor Uzodimma’s intervention to mitigate the financial strain on healthcare services. They also appealed for electricity tariff waivers for community pharmacies and health facilities, noting that lower operational costs would allow providers to offer more affordable care to the public.
