The Imo State House of Assembly has called on Governor Hope Uzodimma to rename the Imo International Conference Centre (IICC) in memory of the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
This request was made to acknowledge Chief Iwuanyanwu’s significant contributions to both economic growth and human development, not only within Imo State but across Nigeria. The motion was presented by Hon. Innocent Ikpamezie, the representative of Mbaitoli Constituency, who highlighted Iwuanyanwu’s exceptional legacy as a respected figure in the South-East and beyond.
Hon. Ikpamezie emphasized that the late Iwuanyanwu had made outstanding contributions to the state’s progress. One of his notable efforts was his financial support for the construction of the Imo State International Cargo Airport. As a global entrepreneur, Iwuanyanwu played a key role in fostering economic progress in the South-East region and the entire country. His philanthropic initiatives—ranging from infrastructure projects like roads and water systems to housing for the needy and scholarships for students—have left an enduring impact on countless lives.
Chief Iwuanyanwu, who passed away while still serving as President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and President of Owerri Peoples Assembly, was widely regarded for his advocacy for peace and unity among the Igbo people. Ikpamezie urged his colleagues to support the renaming of the conference centre as a way to honor Iwuanyanwu’s memory.
During the session, several Assembly members also praised Iwuanyanwu’s lifelong contributions. Deputy Speaker Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu noted his role as an employer of labor, establishing numerous businesses that provided jobs across and beyond the South-East. He pointed to the creation of Champion Newspaper and Iwuanyanwu Nationale Football Club as examples of his impact, particularly on youth employment.
Additionally, Hon. Samuel Osuji, representing Isiala Mbano Constituency, shared a personal testimony, recounting how a contract from Chief Iwuanyanwu transformed his life. He affirmed that the renaming was a fitting tribute to a man who had positively influenced so many.
Following these deliberations, the motion was unanimously adopted, with the Assembly resolving to urge Governor Uzodimma to immortalize Chief Iwuanyanwu by renaming the Imo International Conference Centre in his honour.
