The Imo State House of Assembly has condemned the gruesome murder of a pregnant woman, Mrs Chinwendu Amadi, from Awogu-Logara Autonomous Community in Ngor/Okpala local government area by yet to be apprehended assailants.

This was the outcome of a Motion moved by the Member Representing Ngor/Okpala State Constituency, Rt Hon Prince Obinna Egu, PhD.

Moving the Motion, Hon Obinna Egu explained that the late Mrs Chinwendu Amadi was a small trader, who sold Okpa, a local delicacy, at the Imo Airport. He said she was stabbed, raped and murdered in cold blood. Her unborn child also died.

Condemning the horrific crime in strongest terms, the Ngor/Okpala lawmaker said, “we are mourning. Ngor/Okpala has been thrown into mourning. We are not happy with the brutal murder of Mrs Chinwendu Amadi, an expectant mother. She was stabbed, raped and murdered at the runway side of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport. She was a native of Awogu-Logara Autonomous Community in Ngor/Okpala LGA, and her death has sent shockwaves throughout the Airport and surrounding Communities, as well as widespread outrage and condemnation, even as the unborn innocent child died in the despicable act”.

While acknowledging and commending the efforts of security agencies, including the Police, Army, DSS, Air Force, etc, for their bravery and commitment to maintaining law and order, safeguarding Citizens and Infrastructure, in the face of the brazen atrocity, Hon Egu tasked them to hasten their investigation and ensure that the killers were apprehended and brought to justice. He also commended the efforts of Governor Hope Uzodimma in ensuring night landing facilities were installed at the Airport.

However, Hon Egu explained that the Airport has no fence, which made people to have easy access into it, especially the tarmac and runway. He therefore asked that the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) be urged to construct a perimeter fence around the Airport, rather than the barbed wire that is in place at the moment.

The Motion which was seconded by Hon Engr Bernard Ozoemelam, Member Representing Ehime Mbano State Constituency, was co-sponsored by six lawmakers as follows :

. Rt Hon Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu.

. Hon Kanayo Onyemaechi.

. Hon Chigozie Nwaneri.

. Hon Clinton Amadi.

. Hon Princewill Amuchie.

. Hon Innocent Ikpamezie.

The following lawmakers supported the Motion :

  1. Hon Engr Innocent Ikpamezie (Mbaitoli).
  2. Hon Engr Uche Francis Agabige (Orsu).
  3. Hon Johnleoba Iheoha (Ikeduru).
  4. Hon Kelechi Ofurum (Owerri North).

In their respective submissions, the Honourable Members explained that they supported the Motion with a heavy heart, and described the killing of a pregnant woman as bad omen and sacrilege. While consoling the people of Ngor/ Okpala over the murder, they lawmakers appealed that everyone should do everything possible to protect lives and properties, both at the community level and State level, as killings being reported in recent times have become worrisome. They equally suggested the strengthening of vigilantes, especially as the local government leadership have been activated. Finally, the lawmakers called for the construction of the perimeter fence that demarcates the Airport from the surrounding villages, as it would go a long way in checking reoccurrence.

Satisfied with contributions from Honourable Members, the Speaker, Rt Hon Chike Olemgbe, put it to vote and it was unanimously adopted. Thereafter, he Ruled as follows :

Be It Be Resolved ;

That this Honourable House calls upon security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation of this heinous crime, identify the perpetrators, and ensure they face the full consequences of the law.
