Renowned Ifa priest, Ifayemi Elebuibon, has canvassed for the use of traditional Yoruba method for DNA (paternity) test.
Speaking at his residence in Osogbo, Osun State, during the week, Elebuibon expressed concern over the rising cases of paternity fraud in the country.
He said, “Yoruba has traditional DNA (testing), and it is very potent. They vary from one family or compound to another. We are having a high rate of cases of paternity fraud now, because people have abandoned what belongs to them, and have embraced two foreign religions.”
Elebuibon insisted that the Yoruba traditional approach to determining a child’s paternity was reliable and cost-effective. He added, “The total rejection of Yoruba culture is partly responsible for the high rate of infidelity in marriages. Our traditional practices offer effective means to address paternity issues.”
He continued, “In Yoruba culture, even during childbirth, the paternity of a baby can be determined. In my own compound those days, a new wife would swear to an oath before the Ogun shrine to remain faithful to only her husband.
Traditionally, there are several ways to determine the paternity of a child. Those means are cheap and safe, but our people are not interested in them. There are alternatives available for those interested.”
