A Nigerian Lawmaker Representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, of Anambra state in the House of Representatives Hon. Uchenna Harris Okonkwo, has reiterated his commitment to quality education, a priority clearly stated in his campaign manifesto.
During the House of Representatives plenary session on June 6, 2024, Hon. Okonkwo seconded an amendment moved by Hon. Oyeshina Najimdeen Oyedeji, member representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency of Oyo state. The amendment was made on the motion moved by Hon. Bamidele Salam, member representing Ede North, South/Egbedero/Ejigbo federal constituency of Osun state. The motion called for a review of the Nigerian curriculum for primary and secondary education to align with current global needs and contemporary realities.
In an interview with Journalist after The plenary, Hon. Okonkwo stated that, as an advocate for quality education, he will always support motions, bills, and policies aimed at improving education standards. He explained that the amendment seeks to review, investigate, and establish a proper education policy that includes critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and soft skills like information and communication technology (ICT) and artificial intelligence. This shift from theoretical to practical learning will enable Nigerian students to compete favorably in the global market.
Hon. Okonkwo reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for education policy standards, proper implementation of educational policies, and increased funding for the educational sector in Nigeria.
