Former CJN, Walter Onnoghen, to Challenge 2019 Conviction at Court of Appeal

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, will resume his legal battle at the Court of Appeal in Abuja on Tuesday, seeking to overturn the 2019 judgment of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) that led to his removal from office.

Onnoghen’s appeal, filed in 2019, argues that the CCT lacked jurisdiction, was biased, and denied him a fair hearing.

He is asking the appellate court to quash his conviction on six counts of breaching the code of conduct for public officers.

The CCT’s 2019 judgment, delivered by Chairman Danladi Yakubu Umar, ordered Onnoghen’s immediate removal as CJN, stripped him of other offices, and directed the forfeiture of his five bank accounts and undeclared funds.

Onnoghen’s lead counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, will argue that the CCT’s judgment was flawed and should be set aside.

The outcome of this appeal may have significant implications for Onnoghen’s legal and professional legacy.
