Former Aviation Minister Calls For Resolution Of Election Petitions Before Swearing-In

Former Aviation Minister, Osita Chidoka, has advocated for the resolution of all election petitions before the swearing-in of elected officials to strengthen and improve Nigeria’s electoral process.

Chidoka made this recommendation on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics while reviewing the off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states.

He emphasized the need for a thorough review of election results, including scanning paper ballots and appointing election auditors to ensure accuracy.

Chidoka also suggested that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should utilize its power to review results within seven days to cancel any fraudulent outcomes.

Furthermore, he called for the establishment of an Election Offences Tribunal, as recommended in the Justice Uwais report, to ensure accountability and transparency in the electoral process.

Chidoka’s comments come after the INEC held off-cycle polls in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states on November 11, 2023, which were challenged in courts due to disputed outcomes.
