In a bid to maintain law and order, the Federal Government has taken decisive measures to secure the country’s borders and strengthen security ahead of the planned nationwide protests over economic hardship.
As the nation prepares for the #EndBadGovernance protest, slated for August 1, 2024, the Comptroller General of Immigration Service, KN Nandap, has directed immigration officers to be extra vigilant and step up surveillance at all borders.
The move aims to prevent unscrupulous foreign elements from entering the country and causing chaos during the protests.
Immigration officers have been reminded to display utmost professionalism and patriotism in the discharge of their duties.
Meanwhile, other security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police, have also beefed up efforts to secure the country. The DSS has identified the sponsors of the protest and cautioned against it, warning that some criminal elements plan to hijack the demonstration and cause mayhem.
The police have echoed the DSS’s stance, stating that foreign mercenaries are backing the planned demonstrations. In the Federal Capital Territory, over 4,200 police personnel have been deployed to maintain order.
In a bid to avert the protest, President Tinubu and some state governors have been engaging with relevant stakeholders, calling for dialogue and urging the organizers to give the authorities more time to address the challenges facing the country.
The planned demonstration is a response to the economic hardship and inflation that has pushed the cost of essential commodities beyond the reach of millions.
The Federal Government’s measures aim to ensure the protests remain peaceful and do not compromise national security.
