The Federal Government has approved the establishment of a Federal Polytechnic in Gwarinpa, one of the largest residential estates in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
The approval was conveyed in a letter dated January 16, 2025, addressed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and signed by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.
The newly approved institution, to be called Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic, aims to advance technological, vocational, and entrepreneurial education in alignment with Nigeria’s national education policy. Minister Alausa emphasized that the institution is part of the government’s strategy to equip Nigerians with skills needed for economic growth and self-reliance.
A technical team from the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) will soon visit the proposed sites in Gwarinpa for inspections. The team’s findings will determine the final location and other operational details of the institution.
Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), has expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for the initiative. He also lauded the efforts of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in facilitating the project.
In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Kingsley Madaki, Maikalangu described the approval as a significant milestone for FCT residents. He highlighted that the Polytechnic would contribute to the educational and economic development of Abuja by providing opportunities for youth empowerment and skill acquisition.
The establishment of Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic in Gwarinpa is expected to boost the Federal Capital Territory’s educational infrastructure and provide residents with access to quality technical and vocational education. It marks a significant step toward enhancing innovation and entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
