Over 300 nursing students from Imo State University’s Orlu Campus staged a protest at the Government House in Owerri, expressing outrage over what they claim to be illegal rustication due to purported fake admissions. Carrying placards with messages like “Suicide is Real” and “We no go gree,” the students demanded justice and appealed for intervention from the state government.
The leader of the protest, Awu Philip, spoke on behalf of the aggrieved students, expressing disappointment in the university’s management for taking such drastic action at the 400 level, after the students had invested significant amounts of money in tuition and other expenses since their admission at the 100 level.
Philip emphasized that the affected students were duly enrolled with matriculation numbers and had fulfilled all necessary payment requirements, affirming their official admission to the institution.
However, he lamented that the management’s sudden classification of students into “bonafide and non-bonafide” categories came as a shock and was deemed illegal by the protesting students.
In their collective appeal to His Excellency, Sen Hope Uzodinma, the Governor of Imo State, the rusticated students sought assistance and intervention to address what they perceive as an unjust decision by the university’s management. They urged the government to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure that their rights as students are upheld.
The protest highlights the frustration and anxiety faced by the affected nursing students, who find themselves in jeopardy of being denied the opportunity to complete their studies and pursue their chosen careers. It underscores broader concerns about transparency and fairness in admission processes within Nigerian universities, as well as the need for robust mechanisms to protect the rights of students and prevent arbitrary actions by academic institutions.
As the protest continues to draw attention and support, stakeholders are hopeful that swift action will be taken to address the grievances of the students and restore confidence in the integrity of the academic system. Meanwhile, the Imo State University administration is yet to issue a formal response to the allegations, raising anticipation for further developments in the coming days.
