Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has apologized to his French teammates, including Wesley Fofana, after being accused of “uninhibited racism” for a video posted on his social media account.
The video featured a song sung by Argentina players, including Fernandez, that included a chant deemed “racist and discriminatory” by the French Football Federation.
Fernandez, who is currently on Chelsea’s US tour, addressed the issue and apologized to his teammates, including Fofana, who had described the video as “uninhibited racism”.
Fernandez has also offered to donate to an anti-discrimination charity, with Chelsea matching the amount.
The incident has led to an internal disciplinary procedure at Chelsea, which is now closed, and an ongoing investigation by Fifa, which could result in a potential ban from domestic matches for Fernandez.
Chelsea manager Maresca has downplayed the situation, but the incident has sparked controversy and highlighted issues of racism in football.
