In a major step toward agricultural transformation, the Enugu State Government has announced plans to create 3,600 jobs through its newly established Tractor Assembling Plant located at the old Daily Star office in Enugu. The announcement came on Monday, April 7, 2025, following the arrival of the first batch of 100 tractors, part of the 1,000 tractors promised by Governor Peter Mbah during his campaign.
Speaking to newsmen during the inspection of the facility at the Enugu State Tractor Leasing Company, Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Patrick Ubru, said the initiative is a bold move to promote mechanized farming and boost food production in the state.
“These tractors, imported from Denmark by Notrac, are part of our strategy to increase agricultural productivity by 200 folds. Farming will no longer be a burden — it will become a thriving business in Enugu State,” Ubru said.
He disclosed that within 60 to 90 days, another 100 tractors will arrive, while the remaining 800 will be assembled locally, bringing significant value to the economy and expanding employment opportunities.
The Commissioner also revealed that 260 farm estates are currently being constructed across the state, with each estate housing 200 profiled farmers, fully equipped with modern facilities, improved seeds, and extension services. According to him, 66,000 farmers have already been registered across the agricultural value chain.
The new Tractor Serving Centre will not only house the assembling plant, but also function as a tractor hiring centre and training hub, with 100 drivers already trained and ready to operate the machines.
Ubru emphasized that strict modalities are in place to ensure accountability and proper maintenance of the tractors, noting that the project is a direct fulfillment of Governor Mbah’s manifesto promise to mechanize agriculture for food security and commercial success.
In his remarks, Chairman of the All Farmers Association, Enugu State Chapter, Mr. Romanus Anayo Eze, expressed gratitude to Governor Mbah for the farmer-friendly initiative and assured that the tractors will be put to productive use to ensure a bountiful harvest across the state.
