The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reiterated its commitment to tackling internet fraud, popularly known as Yahoo Yahoo, despite facing criticism. EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede revealed that Nigeria lost over $500 million to cyber fraud in just one year, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Speaking on the evolving nature of these crimes, Olukoyede warned that internet fraudsters are now engaging in more sinister activities, including ritual killings, kidnapping, and arms trafficking. He emphasized the agency’s relentless efforts in combating financial crimes, noting that the EFCC received over 11,000 petitions last year, investigated nearly 9,000 cases, and successfully prosecuted close to 5,000 suspects.
In addition to tackling external corruption, Olukoyede disclosed that the EFCC is also focused on internal accountability. As part of its internal cleansing measures, the agency dismissed 27 staff members over corruption allegations within the past year.
He urged the media to play a more proactive role in shaping public perception and fostering investigative journalism that highlights both corruption and the EFCC’s achievements. Similarly, the Chief of Staff to the EFCC Chairman, Michael Nzekwe, commended the media’s role in public sensitization and called for greater collaboration in the fight against financial crimes.
The EFCC’s intensified crackdown on internet fraud and corruption aims to safeguard Nigeria’s economy and ensure a more secure future for its citizens.
