Flagging off the summit, Governor Nwifuru upheld that the implementation of the outcome of the summit, especially the adoption of Alternative Dispute Resolution in our Justice System will be an investment in public security, peace and development, reinforcing the pillars of the rule of law and sound democratic culture.
Leo Ekene Oketa, Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media noted that, one of the first striking moves made by the Government of Ebonyi State, under the leadership of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru was to introduce innovative reforms in our Judicial System, through the office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Ebonyi State, Dr. Ben Uruchi Odo.
One of those reforms include encouraging Alternative Dispute Resolution in our Justice System, to reduce congestion and delays in dispensation of Justice. There are other fine lines of innovation that have come in play since then, which have become absolutely necessary and helpful in the system.
The Governor’s speech reads, “Ensuring speedy administration of justice in our
system will strengthen our security system and promote investors’ confidence in our society. Employing Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanism in this regard, can go a long way in addressing incessant delays and congestion in administration of justice in the country.
In Ebonyi State, we have set in motion, innovative reforms that combine the current retributive justice system with a restorative and reparative approach. I am delighted that the South East Policy Summit on Criminal Justice Reforms held in Abakaliki today, beamed its light on this area. I remain confident that implementation of the outcome of the summit will be an investment in public security, peace and development, reinforcing the pillars of the rule of law and sound democratic culture.
Thank you greatly, Your Honour, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi and the Attorney Generals from the South East zone, for gracing the event”.
