Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, the Wife of the Governor of Ebonyi State, has called upon the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) to join forces in addressing the issue of police brutality in Nigeria.
During a courtesy visit by the state chapter of POWA, Mrs. Nwifuru emphasized the need for husbands of police officers to actively work towards reducing instances of police brutality, particularly in light of the recent #EndSARS protests.
Mrs. Nwifuru stressed the importance of giving individuals a fair chance to present their defence before facing prosecution, as this would help in distinguishing between innocent victims and criminals.
She expressed her willingness to collaborate with POWA in various government activities and programs within the state.
In response, Mrs. Miriam Anyai, the leader of the group, commended Mrs. Nwifuru for her contributions in maintaining peace within the state.
She highlighted the essential role that POWA plays in empowering and supporting the families of police officers. The association, established in 1979, focuses on projects that add value to families and promote stability within the home front.
Mrs. Anyai further mentioned that POWA is seeking support to implement skills acquisition programs for its members, as well as the establishment of the POWA Complex, POWA shops, and event centers.
The association aims to enhance the well-being and livelihoods of police officers’ families and the wider police community.
The call by Mrs. Nwifuru to the Police Officers Wives Association to address police brutality reflects a commitment to fostering a safer and more just society.
By working together, it is hoped that the association, alongside supportive initiatives, will contribute to reducing instances of police brutality and promoting a fair and equitable justice system.
