In a recent happening, an unidentified couple met a tragic end in Orogwe, located in the Owerri-west local government area of Imo State. Local youths, driven by anger and frustration over recurring motorcycle thefts, took matters into their own hands with fatal consequences.
According to community sources, the couple had been operating in Orogwe and neighboring villages, allegedly involved in a series of motorcycle robberies. The situation came to a head on Monday, September 2, when the pair was reportedly caught attempting to flee with a stolen motorcycle after robbing its owner at gunpoint.
A local informant, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that while the couple was known in the community, their alleged criminal activities had gone undetected until this incident. The source stated, “They were apprehended while trying to relieve a motorcyclist of his vehicle along the Orogwe/Ohii road.”
The community’s mounting frustration with the persistent problem of motorcycle theft apparently boiled over, leading to a gruesome act of vigilante justice. Instead of handing the suspects over to law enforcement, enraged youths and local vigilantes reportedly set the couple on fire, resulting in their deaths.
As of the time of this report, the Imo State Police Command has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the command, was quoted as saying that they had not been formally briefed on the matter.
